DENTAL BRIDGES

A dental bridge is essentially used to replace missing teeth. A bridge is attached to the two other teeth around the space – “bridging” them together. A bridge is ideal when the supporting teeth surrounding the gap are strong and healthy.

Missing teeth can also be replaced with dental implants or dentures.

WHEN CAN A BRIDGE BE USED?

  • When just one or two teeth are missing
  • When the neighbouring teeth are strong enough to support it
  • When the gums are healthy
  • When the extraction site is fully healed (3-6 months)

A bridge may be a good solution when neighbouring teeth already have crowns or large fillings

ADVANTAGES OF A BRIDGE

  • Alternative to a denture
  • look and feel like natural teeth
  • They function like natural teeth
  • No surgery is required (as with implants)
  • They are cheaper than implants

DENTURES

WHAT ARE DENTURES?

A denture is a removable prosthesis used to replace missing teeth. A partial denture can be used to replace some missing teeth where implants or bridges are not possible whilst a complete denture is indicated when all natural teeth are missing.

A denture is usually made of acrylic or a combination of acrylic and chrome cobalt (metal framework). The chrome cobalts require more time in fabrication, but provide a better fit and more patient comfort, as well as being healthier for the remaining teeth

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU WEAR YOUR DENTURES?

During the first few days you are advised to wear them most of the time except when sleeping. Always remove the dentures before going to bed. This will allow your gum tissues to rest and promote oral health. Remember to soak the dentures in water to prevent them from drying out.

A good set of dentures helps you to eat, speak, function, and often improves a person’s appearance
